Emerald Cut Diamond Earrings

When I was growing up, I was fascinated by my mother’s emerald cut diamond earrings. There was just something so elegant about those rectangular stones with three stepped facets on each side and chamfered corners. Each stone was set in white gold and dangled beneath a fleur de lis sprinkled with tiny diamonds. I could stare at those earrings for hours.

My mother liked to go out dancing on Saturday nights and I used to help her decide what jewelry to wear.

She didn’t have a lot of jewelry to choose from: some pearls, a gold medallion on a chain that she’d gotten when she and my father took a trip to Turkey, a pair of amethyst earrings and a pair of silver and turquoise earrings from a trip to Mexico.

I always urged my mother to wear her emerald cut diamond earrings. Somehow, they just lit up her face and made everyone smile.

Those emerald cut diamond earrings had a long history in my mother’s family. Her grandfather, my great grandfather, had given them to her grandmother for their fiftieth wedding anniversary.

Then my grandmother inherited the earrings and wore them to the wedding of Grace Kelly and Rainier III, Prince of Monaco, in 1956.

I inherited the earrings when my mother died last year of heart failure. I found them in a little hand-painted glass jewelry box on my mother’s dressing table. There was a note inside that said, “To my darling daughter. Wear these earrings and remember me.”

Now, when I wear these diamond earrings, I remember my mother, her mother before her and the woman who received them so long ago as an anniversary gift.

Step cut diamonds (square or rectangular cut diamonds that are cut with a pattern that radiates from the center point with a keel instead of a point that has more cuts to create light refraction) have, after losing some popularity in recent years, started to make a comeback. More and more people are finding simple beauties, like those that can be seen in antique jewelry. The most popular of the step cut diamonds is, by far, the emerald cut.

Many people wear pendants or bracelets that are made with diamonds and one of the more popular stones are of the emerald cut variety. However, a commonly overlooked and a much underrated setting is that of rings. There are many different varieties of settings that add a look of class and style to anyone’s jewelry collection.

The major upside to buying and wearing emerald cut diamond rings is that they are not only a great investment, but they are also noticeably less expensive which means that you can afford a larger, higher quality diamond. When purchasing these stones, unfortunately, you must be very careful to make sure that you purchase a very clear and well cut stone because of the nature of the cut.

If you were to buy an overly dark or included diamond it will be much more obvious in this style of diamond because every cut that is in the diamond acts as a window making everything more visible. Also, because of the lack of refraction of light inside the diamond, it appears to be more illuminated instead of sparkly, as if it were actually emitting light.
